Don Giovanni – Jackie's World Travel

I always have to visit the historic theaters when I visit a country because they are all so beautiful with superb architectural design. They also are such a vital part of the country’s culture and history and say so much about Europeans historic appreciation and love for art and music.

Built in the 1783, the Estates Theater is famous for being Mozart’s main opera venue when he performed in Prague. Mozart directed many of his works in this theater including his premier of the famous opera Don Giovanni. Austrian born Mozart performed in Prague so often that he took up a second home there.

The Estates theater is the only standing theater left where Mozart has performed, so of course I just had to see the inside. Unfortunately, you cannot view the theater unless you go to a show. I was determined to see it, so even though the next show was in the Czech language, I bought a nosebleed ticket and went. Although we couldn’t understand the language, I actually enjoyed the play we attended. The actors were great and it was an interesting cultural experience. It was amazing to think Mozart had actually performed on that very stage so many years ago.

I pictured what the theater would have been like in the 18th century with the buzz of all the people fancily dressed up with Mozart himself amongst them.

I feel so honored to say I have been there.

This historic theater is located just outside the Old Town Square (the main tourist area) and is worth going inside for a show so you can see the inside. You can always leave at intermission if you aren’t digging it. The outside of the theater is a very beautiful and unique neo-classical mint and crème colored building decorated in gold. If nothing else, stroll around the outside and take a few pictures of this very historically significant and beautiful building!!
